About Mathew

I have mild case of ASD and also have profound to severe hearing loss for both ears. Currently at 23 years old, I have been through so many experiences which that created beautiful moments during my life. I have completed a Bachelor of Science degree, majoring in Environmental Science at James Cook University in 2012. I am very passionate in environment and sustainability. I am hoping to continue my career progressions by my plans to study Master of Environmental Management at University of Queensland starting February 2015.

Having lived in a regional area on Far North Coast of NSW, I have been experiencing lack of socioeconomic support for my treatment and employment. Thereafter, I finally speak out about my life to the ASPECT's conference in Sydney 2014. See blog post (13 August 2014; for more details). I presented about my struggles living with ASD and with hearing loss, especially in a regional area. There are lack of supporting services here which that could help and improve my lifestyle. I decided to study for research in environment and move to Brisbane (two hours away from here) to gain access to support services and improve my employability.

I have been involved with several volunteer organisations such as Australian Youth Climate Coalition, WIRES, Australian Seabird Rescue, Australian Greens Party and many others. I always tend to choose things I would like to do, especially gaining life and transferable skills for my career prospects.

If you are an academic researcher, a community organisation for people with disabilities, carers and parents I would encourage you to ask me any questions please email me - mathewtownsend91@gmail.com.

I am welcome to provide opportunities for public speaking, conferences and do community awareness within ASD and hearing impaired/deaf. I will be happy to do so.
